The Optimist Club
Rob has been the president of the Optimist Club. Bringing out the best in youth is the mission of this group. Fundraising is essential. The club’s focus is not just for optimists although he suspects many optimists join because of the label. Rob initially joined the club because he had seen a car cruise and was intrigued.
The weekly car cruise had hundreds of antique, classic cars on display and it attracted the public. Along with the cars, music is be played. Rob wanted to be part of the car cruise event and to do that he found out the Optimist Club ran the weekly car cruise.
Rob helped for a few years and then became Director. He was the director for a few years and then decided he wanted to help the club further by bringing his leadership skills into use and he became the President of the Club. He developed it into a bigger and more successful car cruise.
Fundraising was a huge part of the mission since they needed funds to help local youth groups.
Rob shared a story of a time when he visited a coffee shop. The waitress there told two people who came in that they should meet Rob as he was the most optimistic person she had ever met. She had no idea that these two people were the current President and President-elect of the Optimist Club or that Rob had been a past president. This comment filled Rob with pride as it was said in front of his Mother.
Fundraising takes one person to help steer volunteers who do the hard work. Rosemary said it takes a special person to do fundraising. She recounted that she had to be a fundraiser in her Healing Organization.
Fundraising takes a massive team effort. Robs team had 6–8 volunteers every week for fifteen weeks to help make the car cruise run. All summer long Rob and his volunteer’s Sundays were taken up by receiving donations for food, having someone cook and sell the food and to generally keep things running.
Rob’s wife Brenda initially joined the club and helped, just to see her husband on Sundays.
Rob feels he was raised with positivity from his parents. His parents made him believe he could do anything he wanted to do. His parents loved music.
Attitude is a choice. I wake up and say to myself, something good is going to happen to me today, and focus on it. ~Rob Hewlett
Rob understands there are many occasions in our lives where it would be easier to focus on the negativity. He feels we have to eliminate negative people from our lives. He knows bad things happen but says we shouldn’t focus on that.
Every single day something great happens.~ Rob Hewlett
Rob thinks every morning when he awakens, “Something good is going to happen to me today and when he retires at night he goes over his day and tries to remember what special thing happened. It might only be something small, but he appreciates what it is.
Rob sings, and he recently went to a long-term care home. A woman who has been bed-ridden and existed in a wheelchair listened to Rob sing Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love. She begged her husband to help her stand and dance with him. Helping others can bring magic to another, and we too are touched.
Rob becomes Santa each year. He puts on the costume and does more than playing the part. He becomes Santa. He transforms.
Rosemary said this makes the experience much better for the children.
Rob has cultivated the habit of appreciation and being grateful.
Rosemary asks Rob if being positive and upbeat is easy for him.
Create and Sustain a Positive Day
It is easy for a day, it is easy for two days but to be positive and optimistic day in and day out it takes work and effort.
Rob shares his recipe of being positive.
If someone wants to quit smoking, the first thing is to not buy cigarettes. If someone offers one, break it in half and destroy it.
Actively destroy the negative. Stay away from family who sucks the energy away from you. You don’t need to eliminate them.
Get rid of the people in my life who were negative — not spending nearly as much time with them.
Put my hand up stop, please don’t bring your negativity around me. If they don’t stop, walk away. Not in a mean or aggressive way. You can say, I love you to pieces, but I can’t listen to that.
Absenting yourself from the negative or change the subject.
Al recaps saying he sees that Rob sets himself up with a positive scenario each day. “I see that you surround yourself with positive people, do positive things and give back to people, and I think this exponentially affects your life. There is a power to giving back, and it gives you gifts.”
The more you give the greater your returns. ~Rob Hewlett
A thought — just one thought is a living thing. It goes out into the universe and gathers like energy. This higher energy, this universal energy — if it is negative it will gather negative; if it is positive, it will gather positive. What people fail to realize is this thought is yours. It belongs to you. You send it out. You decide if it is going to be positive or negative.
If you have a thought about someone you know, if you are grumbling about them, this energy is sent out into the universe, and like a magnet, it gathers like energy. If it is negative it is going to gather more negative energy; it is going to touch the person you intend it to touch and then it returns to its owner — you. Along the way back it is still gathering like energy, and then you receive it. You receive negative energy that has been compounded. This snowball of negative energy started with you, and it ends with you.
Look at your thoughts if you often feel depressed, unhappy, or miserable. Think about what you have been sending out if you want things to change.
If you are sending out good thoughts, happy thoughts, positive thoughts, they go out to the intended person and then gather more positive thoughts as they return to you.
Rob has found that he does attract positive people into his life and that he is more and more surrounded by positive and happy people. In turn, he has a positive attitude more and more. He sees the compound effect of this process because he is being surrounded by positive people, and with that he is more positive and then more positive things happen in his life.
Picture a snowball. It first starts as snow molded in your hand. It is small. When you begin to roll it on the ground, more and more snow is packed around the initial beginnings of the snowball. Eventually, you can create a large body for a huge snowman. This visual is like what happens with your thought.
If you are continually sending out negative energy about someone, it comes back twice-fold. If negative, we feel unhappy; we feel miserable. If it is positive, it goes out there like a boomerang and comes back to you.
Rob shared that on a recent lunch out with his wife, and there were four people sitting across from them. The older woman came up to him and said, “My you look great.” Rosemary said you are giving off positive energy.
Rosemary said she was at the airport and facing delays and people around her were becoming despondent. Going down the ramp on to the airplane people were coming off as there was a problem and another delay. People were beginning to complain. Rosemary said, “Here’s the thing, if we have to wait around at least we have great company with each other, and it is Christmas after all.” People went from moaning and complaining to smiling.
Rob works in the financial services sector besides his volunteer jobs. He helps people while doing that work. He has chosen to work in service to others, and that makes him happy.
Rosemary said to a girl at the airport, “No matter how hard it is for you find something, do something you enjoy and take pleasure from where you work. You spend half the time of your life working. If you don’t like what you do, change it.”
Rob sells poppies for the Veterans’ Royal Canadian Legion at 6 AM selling to the people going on the commuter train into the city. He sees people going into the city that are not happy. They feel they have to give their family things.
If you are miserable living in that big, wonderful home, it is good to reevaluate and find something that you do love.
Rob helps the families that are struggling with debt or have little retirement as these are the families that are struggling. He wants to help those families and make a difference.
Al said he notices that Rob gives back with no expectation. Rob agreed. He said he sort of gets sucked into the volunteer activities. Miracle on Main is another volunteer activity he does. This event collects toys for children in hospitals. “It is so much fun. I feel bad for anyone who doesn’t have this in their life.”
Find one thing you can do to help someone. In every town or city there is a children’s home, a nursing home, a library, — pick something — one thing, get involved. That snowballs. You start to make friends. You are doing something for your community, for yourself, you are allowing yourself to be creative, to be someone more than you are without that activity.
Rob is always asked the question — Where do you find the time?
“I get up early (6 AM or sooner), spend time with my wife before she goes to her job.”
Rob has a philosophy. “You can waste time, you can either spend time with family and friends, or you can invest time. Stick to half-hour TV shows, or you can invest your time in your business or volunteer activities.
Rosemary added one — she said you need to manage time.
Rob intends to use a journal to see where he wastes time.
The time spent for and on yourself is not wasted if it is something you love.
A little nap can be meditative.
People die of stress, and of boredom — Use your time in a proper way.
- Setting up the day to look for good things. “Something good is going to help me today.
- Appreciating and being grateful for the good things that did happen today.
- Volunteering / Giving Back to Your Community
- Set up your environment to be supportive of being positive.
- Actively destroy or avoid the negative.
- Waste, Spend, Invest or Manage Time — It is your decision. Choose wisely.
